The museum features a lot of Outsider Art, which also leaves me cold. You can only look at twisted wooden gnomes for so long before you start to feel like you're trespassing on someone's glitter- and straw-strewned fever dream.
I recently joined Gilt Groupe out of curiosity. I don't think that it's The End of Fashion As We Know It, as some think, but it does creep me out a little bit. It's an excellent example of passive consumption. You think you're choosing from their wares, but in reality your options are limited by what's discounted that day. My main problem with Gilt is that it brings back images of being dragged by my mother to go bargain-basement hunting at the tender age of four. Which is not to say that their wares are comparable to those at Loehmann's, but the little 'compared to $$$' virtual tags are off-putting.
So, I'm off to search for my perfect springtime trench that won't make me look like a bundle of newspaper.
